Personal profile
Personal profile
My work explores how emerging technologies, especially AI, virtual reality, and augmented reality, are transforming theatre and performance as a practice and industry. I focus on Shakespeare in performance, contemporary European theatre, and the aesthetic and social implications of digital media on stage.
I have collaborated with leading companies and creative studios to push the boundaries of live performance. With the Belgian collective CREW, I developed Hamlet adaptations that integrated virtual reality, culminating in performances at KVS Theatre in Brussels. I also worked with Nexus Studios on an augmented reality reimagining of The Tempest.
My most recent book, Extended Reality Shakespeare (2024), examines how immersive technologies are reshaping the way we stage and experience Shakespeare. Other publications include Hamlet after Deconstruction (2022), Intermedial Shakespeares on European Stages (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and co-edited volumes such as Routledge Companion to European Theatre and Performance (2023), Intermedial Performance and Politics in the Public Sphere and Local and Global Myths in Shakespearean Performance (both Palgrave Macmillan, 2018).
My research has been supported by major international funders, including the EU’s FP7 Framework, the Kościuszko Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation.
I held several editorial roles, including:
- Book Reviews Editor for the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media
- Co-editor of Contemporary Theatre Review’s Interventions
- Regional Editor (Europe) for MIT’s Global Shakespeares Video & Performance Archive
I serve as a member of the AHRC Peer Review College, contributing to the assessment of UK arts and humanities research proposals.
I have been invited to give lectures and seminars at institutions across Europe, including:
- University of Cambridge
- The Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham
- University of Surrey
- University of Glasgow
- University of Murcia (Spain)
- Vrije Universiteit, Brussels
From 2013 to 2016, I co-convened the Intermediality in Theatre and Performance working group of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR).
