Introduction
The Engineering Research Centre (ERC) groups together engineering researchers from across the School of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences . The departments of Computer Science, Information Security and Physics have provided Royal Holloway with a long history of engineering research which has been boosted by the establishment of the Electronic Engineering department in 2016 .The ERC was created shortly afterwards at the end of 2018 to provide a unifying focus in the broad field of engineering, consolidate existing engineering research strengths, enable interdisciplinary research between the departments, support funding applications to UKRI and facilitate the creation of world leading laboratories and capabilities. The main research areas of the ERC are
• Nanomaterials and devices (Wenqing Liu)
• Digital and security engineering (Keith Mayes)
• Microwave, photonic and accelerator engineering (Shyqyri Haxha)
• Energy (Steffi Kuenzel)
The School of Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences was formed in August 2019, from the departments of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Security Group, Mathematics and Physics and has greatly facilitated the ambitions of the ERC and additional relevant areas of research activity within EPMS that complement engineering are
• Applications of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems (Computer science)
• Quantum information processing (Mathematics)
In addition to support engineering research within the School, areas of collaboration with other Schools
• Immersive story telling, augmented and virtual reality (School of Digital and Performing arts)
• Carbon reduction, sustainable energy production and sustainability (School of Life Science and the Environment)
Collaborations and top research areas from the last five years
