The Singing Detective 25th Anniversary Event

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventParticipation in conference

Description

This event was organised by members of the Media Arts Department (John Ellis, John Hill, Lez Cooke, Adam Ganz) in association with the Institute of English Studies, to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the six-part series The Singing Detective, written by Dennis Potter and directed by Jon Amiel.

Regarded as a piece of landmark television because of its narrative complexity, generic hybridity and formal experimentation, this one-day symposium explored the making of this ground-breaking production and assessed its subsequent influence upon new kinds of television drama internationally. Participants included the producer Kenith Trodd, the actors Patrick Malahide and Bill Patterson, the choreographer Quinny Sachs, former Head of BBC Drama, Jonathan Powell, Timothy Corrigan (University of Pennsylvania), Glen Creeber (University of Aberystwyth), John Cook (Glasgow Caledonian University) and the writer Peter Bowker.
