In the work of the artist Mariele Neudecker the military and technological sublime is the subject for a series of enigmatic works in The Air Itself is One Vast Library (2010). Neudecker’s images recall Paul Nash’s paintings of wartime aeroplanes –the protagonists in ‘the War of machines’. Like Nash, Neudecker recognises the monstrous sublimity of the war machines.
