Tactile Learning in Contract Law

Activity: Talk, presentation or media contributionOral presentation

Description

We report on a pilot study investigating the educational benefits of kinaesthetic or tactile learning in studying Contract Law. Our previous research shows that problem solving activities with LEGO® help students consolidate existing knowledge and gain a new understanding of contract law doctrine in a fun and relaxed environment. One of the key features of these activities was the physical interaction with an object (LEGO bricks) which research shows support learning through a combination of several neurological and psychological mechanisms. Despite a growing interest in multisensory legal education, the exploration of its use in legal education is limited. In our previous work, tactile aspects were entwined with other potential affective aspects such as visualisation, experiential learning, and social engagement. The pilot study we are reporting on here provides further data on the aspect of tactile learning by separating the above affective aspects in control groups where students respond to a brief problem scenario using textual, visual, or tactile methods. Specifically, the setup aims to determine whether physical interaction with an object, a multisensory approach, and visualisation techniques enhance the retention and recall of legal doctrinal information in contract law.
