Description
Between June 19 and June 21, our Egham Campus was inundated by around 300 scholars attending the Society for Italian Studies Biennial Conference, hosted this year by Royal Holloway. The Biennial Conferences are part of the mission of the Society to advance public education by furthering the study of Italy, Italian Language, Literature, Thought, History, Society, and Arts in the United Kingdom and Ireland.Delegates of all career stages and backgrounds came from institutions across Europe, North America, the Global South, and Australia. The contributions presented comprised panels, roundtables, and professionalisation workshops, and encompassed the fields of literature, linguistics, and cultural and visual studies. The two keynotes addressed intellectual debates that are at the core not only of Italian Studies but of the Higher Education and cultural sectors as a whole: the social role of language (Vera Gheno; Gigliola Sulis) and of cultural heritage institutions (Roberta Cremoncini; Nicola Lucchi) in shaping and reflecting values and identities.
Delegates enjoyed our beautiful campus on three incredible sunny days, especially the barbecue dinner held in the Founders North Quadrangle followed by a screening of the Italy-Spain Euro 2024 football match (badly lost).
