Description

This year's Mid-Term conference centred around the theme 'Shifting Geographies'. I presented in the session 'Feminist Geographies II: Wellbeing, Ageing, and the Body'.

Title: 'Tracking the menstrual shift in Geography'
Abstract: As menstrual activism continues to gain traction across the globe, there has been a notable shift in societal attitudes, engagement and priorities concerning menstrual health. I argue that this is an opportunity for geographers to establish a commitment to the menstrual, in line with wider discussions reflecting on the discipline’s role in global challenges as well as its responsibilities towards justice.

This paper seeks to collate existing, albeit limited, scholarship on menstrual health within Geography. In doing so, I track the gradual movement from the institutional framework of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) associated with development sanitation policy, to instead elucidate the myriad ways in which the menstrual bleeds into different spaces of society. I demonstrate that attending to the menstrual will contribute to and strengthen burgeoning feminist scholarship that centres the body as a critical site and scale for geographical analysis.
