Description

Freeing Duration from the Durational

I draw upon examples of my own and others’ practice that sits problematically around the boundary of durational and explore how these works may or may not be performances of duration in terms of Bergsonian philosophy.
I suggest that a framework of time-specificity might illuminate the relationship between performance and duration, when it is defined via Bergson as the passage of living time as opposed to a duration. It analyses the experience of temporal transformation through conceptualizing the non-spatial aspects of performance. It is underpinned by thinking performance in terms of the Deleuzian ideal of art that “renders time sensible.”
