Online health communities: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Activity: Talk, presentation or media contributionInvited talk

Description

In this talk, we will explore the complex landscape of online health communities. On the positive side, online health communities provide individuals with a platform to access informational support, connect with others who understand their experiences, and receive emotional support and validation. These communities can be particularly empowering for those living with chronic or rare conditions, who may feel isolated or misunderstood by healthcare providers. However, online health communities can also have a negative impact on the patient-doctor relationship, as individuals may become over-reliant on online advice or mistrustful of medical professionals. Moreover, the spread of health misinformation within these communities can have devastating consequences, leading to delayed diagnosis, misinformed treatment decisions, and harm to public health. This talk will delve into the nuances of online health communities, examining the good, the bad, and the ugly, and exploring the role of Generative AI in countering health misinformation.
