Conference paper: #PB5008: Pinterest, social creation and teaching the new publishing skills.With the rise of digital media, the publishing industry needs editors and marketers who are sophisticated multi-media content curators: not only nimble in choosing appropriate words, but skilled in selecting compelling and brand-appropriate images. This is no longer the preserve of art-school-trained designers. As content is increasingly published across multiple platforms, social apps such as Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram and Storehouse integrate editorial, creative and commercial activities. Many of these forms are primarily visual in their appeal: so how can the skills of image choice and commissioning be cultivated to complement the editor’s traditional text and narrative abilities? This was one of the questions for a new second-year module in the Publishing combined honours BA at Bath Spa University. This module both introduces students to a range of apps, and also employs these as a means of teaching and sharing creative practice. The module gives opportunities to analyse and curate Pinterest boards to explore colour palettes and brand identity; publish images responding to tutor briefs on Instagram; and create photo essays in Storehouse to compare photography styles. This teaching and learning approach facilitates developing confidence in visual skills, and encourages peer learning and cooperation. Students do not need either drawing ability or expertise in specialist software. They do not even need a camera – their phone will do. Apps are specifically designed to be easily accessible and intuitive to use; after a short period of acclimatisation, this allows the focus to be on the content. This paper presents samples of work by PB5008 students; the author also discusses teaching materials and feedback from students and the industry, and reflects on the creative and pedagogical potential of this approach.
