LITHOS Cratons : formation, reactivation and destruction (Eds : Chen, Zhang, Menzies & van der Hilst)The formation and geodynamic evolution of cratons is a topic of wide discussion and debate. A comprehensive understanding of this issue demands not only continuous accumulation of new multidisciplinary observations for individual cratons but also systematic comparisons among cratonic regions of different settings and detailed studies from a global perspective. Actually the ICCFD held in Beijing did provide an opportunity to bring together geologists, petrologists, geochemists and geophysicists from all over the world to exchange ideas and make regional comparisons to better understand the way of continental formation, evolution and destruction from the perspectives of regional differences and similarities. Against this backdrop, we propose a special issue on “Craton formation, reactivation and destruction” assembling contributions with original data/ideas/models and comprehensive reviews, most of which were presented at the ICCFD. The aim of the special issue is to compile the results of the global multidisciplinary research on the current understanding of the formation and long-term evolution of cratons including spatially localized modification and thinning, wholesale destruction of cratonic lithosphere, lithospheric and deeper mantle geodynamics. The contributions in the proposed special issue are expected to have a major impact on future research directions, to stimulate new multidisciplinary research on continental dynamics and to promote regional comparison studies from a global perspective.
