Description

Professor Michael Edwards gave the Eighteenth Annual Hellenic Lecture “The Power of Logos: Classical Greek Rhetoric and the Modern World”, held in the Moore Building Auditorium on 5 March 2020. In 2016, the then President of the United States, Barack Obama, delivered a speech at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in which he praised Greece’s contribution to humanity through the ages. In the course of his speech Obama spoke, among other things, about the concept, ideals and importance of democracy, and the belief in equality before the law for all. In his lecture Professor Edwards discussed these themes, illustrating them by comparisons of ancient texts with modern examples drawn from American, British and Greek political contexts. Hosted by Professor Paul Hogg it was attended by over 80 students, colleagues, Friends, members of the Steering Group, sponsors and supporters. It was followed by drinks in the Moore Building Foyer and dinner in honour of Professor Edwards in the Herringham Room, Founders' Building.
