The lecture will focus on the Christian superpower of the early Middle Ages: The Byzantine Empire or Byzantium, and its interaction with the Rus’, the ancestors of modern Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians. It will trace the role played by Byzantium in the development of their religious, literary and visual culture and of their political ideology as well as considering the relevance of this medieval Byzantine heritage in Russia and Ukraine today. As Byzantium is an area of history that may well be new to many, no prior knowledge will be assumed.
