A Lost Church of Byzantine Constantinople: The Perivleptos

Visitors to Istanbul today can experience only a few surviving examples of the hundreds of churches and monasteries whose domes would have dominated the city’s skyline in Byzantine times. The church of the Virgin Perivleptos, built by Emperor Romanos III Argyros (1028-1034), was one of the most splendid ecclesiastical buildings in Constantinople but has now vanished almost without trace. This lecture will recount the building’s history, reconstruct its appearance and suggest how and why it finally disappeared so completely.
