Keep on Moving: Space, Place and Symbols in Social Work
This paper considers how social workers understand and experience three workspaces: the office, the home (of the social worker) and the mobile workspace. Moreover the experience of movement across and between these different workspaces is examined. A group of social workers took photographs of their workspaces in these three sites of practice and drawing on these then provided a brief narrative of their views and experiences of each workspace. Both visual and textual data were analysed in relation to each specific workplace and also across and through workplaces. The symbols or artefacts which inhabit these spaces, and the meaning given to them by social workers, also forms part of the data analysis.
